Aphra Shemza

Programming: Jamie Howard

Materials: Recycled GreenCast acrylic, LED lighting and bespoke electronic circuit

Dimensions: 2.1 × 0.5 × 0.5 m

Between Us reimagines the geometric forms of Anwar Jalal Shemza's City Walls series as an interactive light sculpture. Inspired by his abstract interpretation of South Asian architectural motifs, Aphra Shemza transforms these two-dimensional forms into a physical structure that can be experienced through movement, light and colour.

Using ultrasonic sensors and bespoke electronics, the sculpture responds to the proximity of its audience. As visitors approach, the illuminated acrylic structure gradually changes colour, inviting them to explore the work individually or together. When multiple people interact with the sculpture, their movements combine to mix colours, creating new possibilities through collaboration. The distance between participants and the sculpture becomes an active part of the experience, transforming the work into a shared dialogue shaped through connection and participation.
